When I worked as a car wash grunt at a Ford dealer as a kid we used to just spray degreaser all over the engine and then hose it down. Never had an issue, believe it or not. Nowadays, with my MR baby I think I'd just use a spray bottle filled with water and vinegar and hand wipe with a rag.
