Vancouver is a beautiful place, but I can imagine that it
is just a bit cold these days!
I use a Canon SX40HS "super zoom" digital camera. It's small enough to be handy but also has a basket-full of features, including a 40X zoom lens, excellent movie capability, and a full set of manual controls. They're not super expensive--a little over $300, I think?
The other half of my photographic gear is a program called Photomatix Pro, for doing HDR (high dynamic range) photography. It's a certain amount of work, but it enables you to capture details in dark, light, and medium sections of the scene. It's kind of like using a polarizing filter to make the clouds in the sky stand out--except on steroids.
