Your best bet may be to try to find a wrecked Z4 and get a deal on a replacement radio, and either swap it or use it for parts. The issue with the e46 radio is a mechanical one, and so the plastic mount became available through resellers, ebay, etc, but that mount was probably changed in our radios. If, and it is a BIG IF, the volume control could be found, it would be a simple swap, but I think you'll have a very hard time finding the volume control, and it may not be the actual volume controller that you turn, but something on the amplifier circuit within the radio. It really stinks, because if it is a bad volume control, it's probably made of about $5-$10 worth of parts.

What happens if you use the volume control on the steering wheel? If that works, then that would help determine where the failure occurs.
