Vanos overhaul isn’t difficult, especially with Beisan’s guide which is excellent. Rod bearings aren’t so tough either (even on jack stands
), but you’ll have to roll your own guide via TIS, E46 M3 forums, and the nice folks here
Depending on what tools etc you already have, you can DIY bearings for ~$8-900 iirc
