I've had a few Porsches... but my coupe experience is only 997 Turbos... of which there is really no comparison to the Z4M Coupe. Porsches really drive nice.. a little weird at times with the weight of the engine being where it is, but overall easier IMO than the Z4 (although I haven't had the Z4 that long).

I like the looks of the Z4M Coupe over the 996... you're going to lose those rear seats and the openness of the cabin, but it's more of what you're looking for that matters. The 996 will probably continue to depreciate, where the Z4M has probably bottomed out and may start to increase in value due to rarity. The 996 is kinda the red headed step child of the 911 line up. The front lights are a love or hate issue.

I'd say go for it... worse case, you buy another 996 in a few years for cheaper... or step up to a 997 which is worlds better interior wise.
