Good points. I ended up getting a set of Nitto NT-05's (not the R) this season. The cost was less than anything from Tire Rack in the extreme performance category and my reading suggests that they should perform as well or almost as well as the Star Specs, RE-11s, and AD08s -- at least to the point where someone like me is not going to be able to distinguish a meaningful difference on the track or otherwise.
But yes, it's definitely a harsher ride than stock and the amount of road noise transmitted certainly seems more than it used to be. Some of this may of course have something to do with having not driven the car for 3 months, and getting used to the relatively cushy and quiet ride in my 3-er. Not a big deal, in any event, as I don't DD the M and was hoping to make a significant step up in my autocross/track involvement.
