I just bought a tripod adapter for my iPhone and used that. It was awesome to be able to watch the video instantly, and if you have good GPS signal you could try using the app "laptimer" that does overlay info (I didn't have good enough signal)

Where did you mount your iPhone? I've got an Evo and this sounds like a good idea...been interested in the GoPro for a while now, just no reason to buy yet. (Caravan to MFest is a different story though!)
