Although the E46 M3 shares our engine I consider the E9X M3 more closely to our cars timeline. The last raw M cars.
And I agree the 3.0si is also a great platform in its own right.. (Minus the LSD) but the low production combined with the S54 is what will make the Z4M shine down the road.

I wouldn't get hung up on the mileage either. Drive the car the way it was meant to be driven and maintenance the crap out of it! (Exterior, interior and mechanically with receipts!)
A high mileage car that looks mint and was well maintained is still a gem.
