I own a '90 964 and have not driven a 993. But from what I've heard, the experience is somewhat similar, with the 964 being a little more raw.

With that said, I don't think the M Coupe is in the same class of car, even compared against my older 911. I view it as a better GT touring car, but I feel like the car is not raw and really sharp like a 911. Having the motor up front is the fundamental difference. Having a drive shaft is also a downer, because you get all that lag and lash. I love how the 911 motor revs so quickly. The Z4M revs quickly, but nowhere near as close to the 911.

Both of my cars feel equally fast in a straight line. My 911 has Bilstein shocks and GC coilovers, chip, exhaust, 4-pot rear caliper conversion. My Z4MC has Koni shocks, GC coilover, SS brake lines, Stoptech pads.

911 wins:
-Brakes on the 911 are FAR superior.
-Steering feel and response on the 911 are FAR superior.
-Ride quality in the 911 is way better too, probably from not sitting on the rear wheel.
-Cargo space is probably a little more in the 911 due to the rear area.
-More active forum community
-Gas mileage 16 (but probably because I only drive my 911 when I want to really have fun)

Z4M wins:
-Interior on the Z4M is nicer and more supportive.
-Maintenance is harder on the 911, because of the motor location.
-Looks are super unique and parts are a little cheaper.
-Gas mileage 20 (but probably because I drive this car nicely)
