I replaced the cowl on mine a while back. I tried the puller method, but I still couldn't get the damn things off. I ended up spraying some WD-40 and who knows what else in there to loosen the arms up. Then you basically just have to grab the arms and wiggle them up and down. It feels like you're going to snap the arms or strip the teeth so be careful, but they will come loose.
