3rd gear pic:
As you can see nowhere close to touching HVAC controls. With that said, Id consider doing one of (or all) of the following: cdv delete, trans flush (despite BMW claiming lifetime, oem or Royal Purple), trans mounts. That might help with your 2nd gear grind
