Don't have any experience with the n52's but since no one is replying, I'll give it a shot.

The two most popular one's for the n52's are:
- OE BMW Castrol 5w-30
- Mobile 1 0w-40

I see you're in Toronto so because of it being a little colder up there I'd probably do a 50/50 mix between the two.

Regardless, you're experiencing a ticking noise. This seems like a common issue for n52's in cold climate. People have replaced the lifters, but the noise returned later down the line. This is due to the bad head design which lacks in oil supply to the lifters. The only one I found that did solve the issue completely is getting the head replaced. Before taking that step, what I would do is change the oil and filter in shorter intervals. No more than 7,500 would be ideal. If the ticking continues, you might need to consider a new head replacement.

I wish I can provide more information. I'm just not as familiar with these engines. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
