Seems like that's only foolproof if it's mechanically linked to the door mechanism, if it's electronic I would expect it to fail within a year or two. Hell even if it's mechanical it probably has a cam arm that's in the door, and they'll make it out of plastic which will snap. One day, "oh no, how did my door dent that car? Oh well..."
