I've lost 1 on my M with no effect to braking (did not notice it until washing the car).
It's purpose is to keep the outer pad firm against the holder-once the caliper mounting slide pins are screwed in the caliper assembly is firmly mounted and pads cannot become dislodged until the slider pins are released.
