I'm also an old fart, but big on User Interface. Using the phone as a controller (which I currently do for Spotify and for Waze) is too distracting in my opinion. There are no touch haptics/feedback and you are too drawn to look "down" at your phone and away from the windshield. Even with a clunky touch controller, you've got the graphics high on the dashboard and you can still somewhat keep your eye on the road.
