I'm not an avid auto crosser, I do maybe 2-3 a year tops, and usually have to leave by noon so no timing. Where I find the biggest difference is in BRAKING. On the track, you're really on the brakes, a lot. like THRESHOLD braking for seconds at times. On auto cross, you're only braking to set up the front suspension most of the time. I find myself over-braking for most of the tighter turns and losing way too much time in AX.

In fact, I find karting has far more similar skill sets to AX than AX to track. In karting, the brakes are only used to balance the kart, not to slow the kart down.
