I replaced my
exhaust hub without removing the front of the car or raising the engine. I just disconnected the hood release cable and moved it out of the way.
Can't see why they make a big deal about it. The only thing that stopped me from lifting it right out was the control valve sticking out of it (#1 below).
Once you have the Vanos off the head, holding it in one hand, pop the control valve off with the other hand.
Just don't drop it into the timing chain.
