I'm a big believer in the longevity of BMWs, given proper maintenance. That said, if I buy a used car, I still look for the lowest mileage cars. This way, I know the proper care and maintenance was done along the way. I bought my M5 with < 20K miles in 2004 as my DD...this many years later it has 80K and looks and drives as new. But I'm the one who assured proper engine warm up before spirited driving, specified the duration for the oil changes, performed Blackstone UOA on a regular basis to assure proper oil change duration and look for premature wear, and provided compulsive maintenance. Same will happen with my M coupe, which had 9K miles when I bought it last year.
So I think the cars and the engines can last, but certainly I'd do due diligence in buying a higher mileage car, particularly if it has had multiple owners.
