^ All true. The filter is another line of defense, and it's good to have an additional point at which the oil is filtered.

The question I have is this - has anyone experienced a failure due to this filter clogging? If you've opened it up and seen it partially blocked or very dirty, I'll even count that.

I suspect the number of particles that this filter catches is so small that it will outlast the life of the car. If something disintegrates and causes enough debris to clog this filter, you have other issues and VANOS is furthest from your mind. The only people I've heard so far saying it's a common failure point are the ones selling it. To convince me I need data - pictures, recalls, or unbiased firsthand experience. It's conjecture right now.

With the amount of fear surrounding the VANOS, you could probably sell VANOS motorsport wizard dust that the Bavarian fairies need to maintain good bowel function.
