Everywhere else, 1 "litre" of oil is exactly 1000 mL. The confusion is that BMW sells oil in both Liters and Quarts. The 5W30 oil that is used in most BMW comes in 1 Quart bottle = 946mL as pictured. The 10W60 used in ///M engines comes in 1 Liter bottle = 1.05 Quarts, also pictured here. Oil fill for our S54 engine calls for 5.5L, which should be approx. 5.8qt...so most people would just round up to 6qt and call it the day. But since the 10W60 comes in Liter, these mechanics are actually pouring 6L (approx. 6.34qt), which is a good 0.5 liter overfilled.
