You should be able to see pads thru wheel. Just confirm inner and outer pad are similar thickness as well as fore and aft on the pad. Unevenness would indicate a problem with the caliper.

A small "dental" mirror and a flashlight helps.

Taking the wheels off will give you a better view and removing the pads completely and laying all of them out on a table would be the most scientific. You would also be able to see if the pads are degraded. They would look dry and cracky. (Google Image cracked brake pads) If they are, most likely your rotors will need to be replaced along with pads because that friction interface is poor and over heating.
