Under Car Airflow-Rear Bumper Design

General question trying to understand some of the design concepts of our Z4's. The Z4M has a rear bumper which is vented on the lower portion while the non M cars do not. Is the purpose of the venting to increase air flow which would improve cooling of the differential (knowing that the M cars have an LSD which does generate greater heat)? Does this venting create, diminish, or have no significant effect on airflow turbulence? On mid and rear engine cars it would seem obvious that the airflow is important for cooling. Is this a functional or a cosmetic difference between the cars?
