The red pull ring activates a bypass of the hydraulic pump that does the lowering and raising of the top. The Achilles heel of the Z4 roadster is the location of the pump assembly for the top. It's located in the driver side drain funnel for the top compartment, and if the drain gets clogged the pump assembly gets flooded and the motor dies from corrosion. The release mechanism can also get corroded and get sticky, and it either won't pull and release or if pulled it won't go back in.
