Good question - I have never patched one myself. Over the past 15 years I have only had one flat where my tire deflated on me - all other occasions for repairs have been where I could see a screw or nail and drove it in to someplace that could fix it. I also have AAA Plus in case I am in range of somewhere that can fix it, so the kit is for last resort only.
I also have a can of Fix-a-flat I will carry on trips too.
