I stand by my statement that if you're already spending that kind of money on a car, step up and go for at least a 997S.
If you want to be seen driving a Porsche 911 and want to be able to say you drive a Porsche 911, the 997 base is the car for you.

I hear what you're saying, and I'd probably pony up for the S as well. But I stand by my assertion that the base 997 is a hell of a car. For some people, $72K is already a stretch but they want a 911, and I see no shame in buying a "lowly" base 997.
