Yes it needs the vibrant air from the intake, so you do need to drill in the manifold of the engine.
Mounting it on a supercharged manifold would be a bad idea, because it's pressurised, and that would pop the membrane in the sound generator for sure and consequently and seriously mess up the afr and performance.
