i can verify that the purple+white wire will switch on and off with the car. it is powered with key in position 2.
as an additional comment to the superb diy here, the removal of the reading lights assembly unit and the rear view mirror housing are both not required. i simply spiced into the purple+white, connected the provided main connector, grounded the black wire to one of the two screws inside the housing and used the straight phone line connector and pushed one end through the top of the headliner to pop out on the left side of my rear view mirror. super clean and easy installation, took less than 10 minutes!
