On my E90 the elbow attaches to the battery, not the car body. A pic of the original vent tubing set up will help me out with putting the battery installation back to original equipment standards.

Found this in my collection of images from the forums. (Pre mod photo of battery box size reduction for dual exhaust install. IIRC smaller battery is an Odyssey.) Hope this helps.
