Great thread.
I've seen some aluminum subwoofer cabinet ports in my travels that would likely work a bit better then plastic to clamp down on. But I can't find them now. IF I do see them again, I will post something up.
I did this mod on the 1989 E30 M3 I use to own. It was a lot easier as there were actual kits available for the backing plates. I believe I sourced out my duct-work from the local airport repair parts desk in case any other readers were wondering where that cool looking orange duct comes from.
